If you are an adult and have had a cavity then you have probably had a filling made of amalgam. While often referred to as a silver filling, there is actually more mercury than silver in the filling material. In fact, 50% of the material is mercury. Many people are concerned about the safety of amalgam fillings because mercury is a toxic metal that can accumulate in the body.
Even so, millions of people have amalgam fillings and many dentists still use the material. The topic of whether or not mercury is safe for dental use is quite controversial. The controversy surrounds possible leakage of mercury from old amalgam into the blood stream.
They have made a conscious decision to use white composite fillings in lieu of amalgam. Composite fillings have several distinct advantages over amalgam. Not only do they contain no mercury, but they bond to the tooth, thus strengthening the tooth instead of weakening it as amalgam does. They cause less tooth sensitivity, and their color can be matched to your teeth.
